Recently, OPM is becoming my jam again. None of the new stuff, sadly. But it feels refreshing listening to songs in my native language.

I think it started the other day when Enzo and I were talking about Japanese singer YUI. I’m not exactly a big fan of YUI but I accidentally spilled my secret that I’m a closet Kitchie Nadal fan as there have been numerous comparisons between Kitchie Nadal and YUI. I liked her solo and I loved her Mojofly works. (And yes, I’m a closet fan of a lot of acts. Not that I think they’re bad but it’s just that people don’t seem to expect I could like certain artists. Kitchie, Orange and Lemons and Jennylyn Mercado are three best examples)

Then, a few days later, Enzo paid a visit to Elbi. With him were these:

Kitchie Nadal and The Dawn

Kitchie Nadal and The Dawn Albums. Thanks Enzo!

I didn’t even know these old stuff were still on print. Either that, or the store he got them (he says he found them at National Bookstore LOL) just happened to have such a dire/awesome (depends on perspective) selection.

It’s literally been years since I held and OPM CD. The only music cds I’ve been buying lately are admittedly V6 ones. The last OPM CD I bought was Teeth’s Dogs Can Fly. And how long ago was that? 2004? Hm. Now I’m tempted to get more.

But I don’t know though. Somehow I feel like the money I spend to buy music only fills the executive’s pockets. We’ve all read those SOPA and PIPA arguments haven’t we? Which is why I sort-of have this belief that the best way to support artists is to catch their gigs. Or am I so wrong with that?

I’d really like to get into the OPM scene again. But somehow they’re not as accessible? They’re harder to find on the Internet (well, compared to K-pop which is being pushed so hard  it’s like it’s waving its butt in front of everyone’s face already) It feels as though the music industry in the Philippines are a bit unkind to newer acts, and the young artists are pretty much happy just to get gigs. I know there are a lot of promising acts out there but I really don’t know where to start finding them. Care to recommend bands? Point me to the right direction please.

Maybe I could get my ass over to some Cafe Antonio Sessions or Audio Heavy Productions‘ next gig.

I admit, those are also the same reasons I’m pretty much a pirate kid. But I’m willing to shell out money for local artists that have a place in my heart. (If it’s a foreign act, I have to really like them before I drain my funds on physical CDs) Hey, it’s definitely cheaper and better for the economy and local scene if I buy their stuff instead of blowing $$$ on YesAsia (but I’m still getting V6′s new single and DVD).

Speaking of OPM, I can’t believe this video isn’t viral yet.

I’m not worthy to be even watching this epic moment on Youtube! *Sobbing and crying*

I’m so glad I caught this on Nina Sandejas’s Tumblr. (read the cute story about the jam here) This is beautiful, amazing, epic… I love how relaxed everything is and how casually they could still play their own old songs and seem to enjoy it. Plus they sound super good. Trust me, I’ve watched videos of K-pop and J-pop acts casually jamming (perhaps even those were slightly scripted)  and they sound, well, not very pleasing to the ears. But this! Minus the obstructions in the background and a few glitches, this could be a record yo!

Brb, downloading those Rivermaya songs from My Music Store PH. (cross fingers the artists get their due commission and that Universal does not hog all the profits) It’s about time I give a little back to the artists who have inspired me.

Last Dec 3. my friend Adele and I decided to go to the San Pablo Comics festival. Last time I actually got involved in something komiks was pretty much during my childhood’s Bata-batuta and Funny Komiks heydays. Plus I’d read that section of the newspaper first, along with the horoscopes hehe. While we’re admittedly not into the Komiks scene, we went for the good time (any time spent with Adele is bound to be gold).

Also, some friends from the UPLB Graphic Literature Guild were peddling their wares.. I realized Enzo isn’t in any of my photos that day. Oh well.

This is Manix Abrera of Kikomachine, signing a copy someone bought. Adele pointed out that if this were an event in Manila, he’d be stressed from the endless queue of screaming fangirls. Here though, he’s pretty chill.

Adele and I got too fascinated by these drink and fries they were selling. It made us look as though we were eating fries through a straw.

While browsing, we saw a comic with this baby. We don’t know if it’s cute or scary. And we can’t figure out if those dots are his eyes or his nostrils.

We couldn’t decide what to buy so we went with what’s familiar. I got Kikomachine #7 and I think Adele went with the 5th one. And we had our photo taken with the creator. (LOL @ GLG members photobombing!)

Anyway, this was what I bought.

Signed. ^_^

Overall, it was a pretty fun event. I don’t usually go to comics-related events, but I saw a lot of stuff I wanted to buy so maybe I’ll be checking out other komikero events in the future. And I’ll come prepared!

The Joyce of Living's NAPBAS Picks

I’m pleased to find out that a lot of the blogs I’m following made it as finalist of the Nuffnang Asia-Pacific Blog Awards 2011!  I will be voting for them because I’ve been reading their stuff for a long time now and the nominations are much deserved. Here are the blogs that I hope will win. xiaxue

Most Influential BlogXiaxue. I’m not sure what they mean by influential, but her blog gets more hits in a day than my blog gets in two yeras. She’s queen of plastic surgery, brutally honest and haters have nothing on her. Virtually un-trollable. Also, she struck the final nail on Peter Coffin. Yup. When my blog grows up, I want it to be just like hers.

Helga

Most Original Blog DesignHelga. Because like me, she loves putting kitties on her blog theme. Her favicon is also a kitty. Seriously though, I really like her blog theme because she could really pull-off a three-column layout. Most websites with more than one sidebar make me so dizzy because i keep getting distracted from the content. She keeps her layout nice and clean but not minimal and boring, and I believe she should get an award.

Ladyironchef

Best Food BlogLadyironchef. Because of this blog, I already have a list of places I want to eat in if ever I end up in Singapore. The photos are just too yummy looking that reading this late at night totally makes me ruin my diet. And did you know, Ladyironchef is not a lady!!!!

Cheesie

Best Fashion Blog – I can vote every 2 hours so I’m alternating between Cheesie and Camille Co. I never actually thought of Cheesie’s blog as a fashion blog. However, I do love her style to bits. It takes a lot of effort (and guts) to go all-out Gyaru outside Japan. Camille Co, on the other hand, strikes me as a sort-of modern Imelda. Not just shoes-wise but more because her style exudes opulence and maximalism, two things I believe is essential to what I call the burgeoning Filipino Aesthetic. And she pulls it off so well.

Geekout PH

Best Geek BlogGeekout.ph. Of all the nominees, THIS is actual geekery. Not random reviews of technology or announcement of new gadgets. Not info found elsewhere online. We’re talking real obsession here. AND there’s an article pitting Combatron against Rockman WTF

Googly Gooeys

Hidden GemThe Googly Gooeys. They blog about usual, daily experiences using witty cartoons. Not just any cartoon but these gooey blue and pink blobs Ponggo and Tipsy represent themselves. If that’s not enough, they are actually a couple IRL (they just got married). A couple blog, in cartoon form. Few things get cuter than that.

These are the people I’m rooting for, mostly because I’ve been their longtime reader. If you are unsure who to vote for, I highly recommend you check these blogs out. Voting ends in a few days!

… or at least, by me and my friend.

I’ve always wondered about the difference between the perception of beauty of men and women. Why is it that there are some girls who are so damn popular with men, while women are all “really, now?”. And no, it has nothing to do with jealousy. See, last night I was having this usual conversation with my friend Zephyr. He shared with me a photo of Saoirse Ronan, and I agreed that she was pretty. We were both rather amazed because that’s one of the very rare times we actually agreed that a girl was beautiful.

He named a couple more women that he thought was pretty, and the name Zhao Wei was mentioned. I remembered a time way back when the movie So Close was popular, me and my friends were debating whether Zhao Wei or Shu Qi was hotter. Interestingly, most women chose Shu Qi while men chose Zhao Wei. It was a long argument that ended up in nothing, because clearly, it was personal taste. But I’ve always been bothered by this disparity. Zephyr said that because of this, we cannot consider someone “beautiful” unless we, a girl and a boy, both agree. So we spent the night throwing names of celebrities and giving a yes or a no. I later proposed to include male celebrities to see if it works when rating men as well.

After a long night, here are the gods and goddesses we came up with:

WOMEN (Zephyr’s Ranking):

Olivia Wilde
6. Olivia Wilde

She’s one of the women I just envy. I want her face AND body.

Zhang Zi Yi
5. Zhang Zi Yi

I actually decided against her, thinking someone else deserved the most beautiful title. But when we really couldn’t agree on anything (and couldn’t make our pathetic 5 list) I took it back. OMG How could I have been so blind?

Kate Beckinsale
4. Kate Beckinsale

Was rather undecided with this choice as well. She might be too girl-next-doorish, but she grows on you, and that’s rather hard to ignore.

Jeon Ji-Hyeon
3. Jeon Ji-Hyeon

Remember when I said that we wanted at least 5 people? Well, I accidentally mentioned someone after the listing and my list got bumped to 6. Zephyr of course wanted 6 girls on the list too, so we debated some more before finally agreeing on this sassy girl.

Rebecca Hazlewood
2. Rebecca HazleWood

So before you think we’re only limiting beauty to Asians and caucasians, here’s this lovely English-Indian lass (she’s actually one of our first choices, after Soairse). Trust me, we’ve been going on all night naming beautiful women of every race and it’s damn difficult to agree.

Saoirse Ronan
1. Saoirse Ronan

The girl who started this whole debate. Seriously, look at that face. Such a classic young beauty. It doesn’t matter what your “type” is. She’s undeniably beautiful. She’s got that type of face that just never goes out of style.

MEN (My Ranking):

Johnny Depp
5. Johnny Depp

Seriously, anyone who says Johnny Depp is only cool but isn’t really good looking must be on drugs. That, or they’ve only seen Pirates. Look at that face. That doesn’t happen very often.

Tamaki Hiroshi
5. Tamaki Hiroshi

He’s tied with Depp for 5th place. How can someone look so bratty, aloof, smart, sensitive, boyish and sexy all at the same time? (Not to mention his character in Nodame Cantabile was played out flawlessly)

Kenichi Matsuyama
4. Matsuyama Kenichi

He always seem to have such perfect hair that complements his unique features. Plus, look at those luscious lips, I think he might be an awesome kisser. He’s had some very nice kissing scenes in his movies (PROOF). And I should really stop fantasizing about newly married men.

Heath Ledger
3. Heath Ledger

That good boy, bad boy, relatable but unattainable aura of Heath Ledger is what puts him on my #3. And oh come on, if you’re a girl, you can’t not be smitten by Heath in 10 Things I Hate About You.

Osamu Mukai
2. Osamu Mukai

I’m sorry, I know a lot of people find him overrated but he’s just this uncurable fetish of mine. That baby face but with slight swagger, plus the fact that he can pull off white hair. Add to that his perfect man character in Seigi no Mikata makes me wanna take him home to meet my parents. He’s just flawless for me.

Leo Di Caprio
1. Leonardo Di Caprio

You’ve seen his movies and his pictures. That’s all the reason you’ll ever need.

THE HOW-DARE-U-NOT-LIKE-THEM LIST:

We tossed around so many names, including our faves. I think we got just a wee bit hurt that our biases didn’t pass each other’s standards. Here’s where it hurt the most:

I thought Zeph would like:

  1. Kimura Takuya (really, your lovely Yoona fawns over him)
  2. Okada Junichi (HDU HE’S BEAUTIFUL)
  3. Rafael Rosell (Kahit palaging nekkid yun ang hot kaya niya! Ever since Tabing Ilog!)
  4. Song Hye Kyo (You like Jeon Ji Hyeon but not Song Hye Kyo??? That doesn’t make any sense)

He was butthurt that I said no to:

  1. Emma Stone (I thought she was on Desperate Housewives ;A;)
  2. Diane Kreuger (She’s pretty but she’s idk, she’s just looks so tired)

THE WE-CAN’T-BELIEVE-WE-FORGOT LIST:

Catherine Zeta-Jones

0. Catherine Zeta-Jones

FML I’ve already drafted this entire post when we remembered Catherine Zeta-Jones. She’s easily #1 on our list but since Saoirse already got that, I’m adding her on #0.

All images were taken from the amazing Intartoobs.

I was tempted to blog a comprehensive vanity list, but I remembered that I already did that for Christmas. Therefore, for my birthday, I’m paring it down to bare essentials aka stuff I really want.

A hula hoop!

1. A new Hula-hoop. Specifically a non-collapsible weighte hula-hoop. They say jogging is the new badminton. Well, then I’m determined to make hula-hooping the new jogging. ( Err… not gonna happen? Ok. ) I need a new fun exercise that I can do alone and without paying for silly classes. It used to be running but the weather started getting unpredictable so I don’t run as often anymore. I tried belly-dancing but I couldn’t advance without taking real classes (youtube tutorials can only teach so much, I don’t even know if my posture is correct). I learned hula-hooping last year, and I’m gonna make it my choice workout for 2011.

2. A weighing scale. I already mentioned that in the Christmas post. A weight-watcher’s scale would be nice.

And finally…

Topless Inocchi

3. Topless Inocchi pictures to inspire me coz I am such a perv, preferably from 90s-early 00s era, back when he wasn’t too skinny yet. I liked his build the most out of the members of V6. Not to buff, not too skinny, amazing v-shape and most of all no moobs. Yep, just the thing I need to inspire me to work out.

Speaking of Inocchi, I’d like to wish his son a “Happy 1st Birthday!” Inocchi Jr. celebrates his birthday tomorrow, March 2, just a day before my birthday. Ok, that seems rather disturbing to want shirtless photos of a man, then wish his kid a happy birthday after. But he’s an idol, it can’t be helped. His job is to be admired. ^_^

That’s all.
